Raising a Glass, Changing Lives: Wine Quest Celebrates 30 Years
On May 8 and 9, 2026, Wine Quest will celebrate 30 years of raising a glass and critical support for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Wine Quest began in the mid–1990s, when Quest’s late founder and CEO emeritus, Katie Porta, recognized that diminishing state funding required new, flexible sources of revenue. That first year, she and board member Tico Perez tested a small wine tasting and a Scotch nosing. The wine tasting became an immediate success.
From tasting to tradition
When the event moved to the Grand Bohemian Hotel, Tim Varan, Certified Wine Educator and owner of Tim’s Wine Market in Ivanhoe Village, played a pivotal role in elevating the experience. Varan coordinated Master Sommeliers, including George Miliotes of Wine Bar George, to teach classes, lead tastings and introduce guests to a deeper appreciation of wine. During this time, Wine Quest grew into a weeklong celebration.
“The event grew much more quickly than we anticipated,” Tico recalls. “Katie was always willing to explore new ideas, but she also knew when to scale back and focus on what made the most sense.”
Eventually, Quest refined the celebration into the two–night premier format guests enjoy today at Caribe Royale Orlando. Yet within those two nights, opportunities continued to expand through partnerships that elevated every aspect of the experience.
In 2006, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits joined as a presenting partner, helping introduce the now iconic Grand Tasting Experience on Friday night. Their involvement broadened Wine Quest’s reach and deepened the quality of wines and spirits available to guests.
Additional partnerships with renowned vineyards such as Stag’s Leap, Ferrari–Carano and Blue Rock Vineyards have also shaped Saturday’s Premier Wine Dinner & Celebration. Vineyard–selected wines are paired with a four–course menu crafted by Chef Michael Santacroce and the culinary team at Caribe Royale Orlando.
A mission worth toasting
For longtime supporters like Jim Etscorn, the evolution of Wine Quest paired with its profound charitable impact is what makes the event so meaningful.
In 2010, Jim’s firm, BakerHostetler, represented Quest in a case that helped expand opportunities for independent living. The experience gave him a deep appreciation for Quest’s work and inspired him to introduce others to Quest’s mission.
“The dinners have allowed our firm to showcase Quest and all it does to clients and friends. Every person who attends Wine Quest walks away with a profound understanding and respect for Quest’s mission.”
Proceeds from Wine Quest support Quest’s comprehensive programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities — including therapy and education, employment training and placement, residential communities, life skills development and summer camp experiences.
“Every guest, every pour and every moment of support helps transform the lives of the individuals Quest serves,” says Brittany Pilcher, senior director of philanthropy. “One sip can spark opportunity. One night can shape a lifetime.”
