Katie Porta’s journey in the developmental disabilities community began at a state hospital in Tallahassee, Florida. Throughout her career as an advocate, she became an icon and a driving force for change. Her early activism was fueled by a deep commitment to improving the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities who had too often been isolated, underserved, and denied opportunities. Over time, Katie emerged as a leader in community inclusion, helping others understand that people with developmental disabilities seek the same things everyone else does: acceptance, meaningful relationships, employment opportunities, personal growth, and opportunities to participate fully in community life.
