Those We Serve – Steven

As individuals navigate the complexities of aging, the need for support often becomes increasingly evident. For Steven, discovering Quest marked a pivotal moment that helped him regain his independence and significantly enhance his quality of life.

Embracing unique abilities

Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at birth, Steven has always embraced his unique abilities to foster independence. He thrived in public schools and pursued vocational education. With the guidance of a dedicated job coach, he secured his first job at Pizza Hut. His passion for swimming even led him to participate in the Cerebral Palsy Olympics, where he gained national recognition and traveled the world.

However, as he grew older, the need for a supportive environment became clear for his continued engagement in the community. When his job coach recommended Quest, Steven transitioned to an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) and began participating in activities and utilizing services at Quest’s Training Centers. Now, two decades later, Quest is an integral part of his routine, providing him with the opportunities to lead a fulfilling life.

“I took to the transition right away,” Steven recalls. “I was willing to do anything to socialize with more people and potentially find work.”

Helping individuals live a full life

Understanding his needs and goals, the ICF staff quickly maximized opportunities to enhance Steven’s personal care and safety while encouraging social interactions with peers and the community. By helping him attend programs at Quest’s Training Centers, which focus on developing recreational and life skills, he deepened his passion for connecting with others. This commitment to community has enabled him to build relationships with individuals from various residential homes. Group activities, such as watching movies in the game room or cooking in culinary classes, became cherished moments that enriched his experience.

“Being at home all the time isn’t fun. I enjoy being around people, socializing and engaging in different activities,” he shares.

Quest also prioritizes community outings, inviting participants to engage in shared activities beyond the center. From visiting the Florida Aquarium to cheering on his favorite team at Raymond James Stadium, Steven has eagerly taken advantage of these first-time opportunities. Volunteering is equally vital to him; it has become an integral part of his routine. He appreciates his time volunteering at the Snack Shack, an on-site convenience store where he interacts with visitors, manages the cash register and stocks shelves. This role has not only helped him maintain his vocational skills but has also strengthened his sense of belonging and purpose within the community.

As Steven continues his journey, we celebrate his resilience and dedication to maintaining independence. His story reminds us that, with the right support, a fulfilling life is always within reach. To learn more about Quest’s programs, visit Quest, Inc.
