Those We Serve – Robert

For decades, Quest’s Group Homes in Orlando have been a trusted partner for families, providing high-quality care to individuals with developmental disabilities. Through a nurturing environment, residents like Robert experience meaningful engagement and greater independence.

The early stages

Robert’s mother, Jackie, initially had no reason to believe her son might have a developmental disability. However, when he hadn’t reached key milestones like his older sibling, Jackie sought answers, and Robert was eventually diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Upon diagnosis, Jackie enrolled him in a program that provided essential therapies. Her initial research stressed the importance of early intervention and professional support, which provides a solid foundation for future growth and better long-term outcomes. She also applied for support services through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities after being urged by a nurse. The state agency distributes Medicaid funding and services for people with developmental disabilities.

Robert was about seven years old at the time. I knew and read enough about cerebral palsy to know I couldn’t move his body about forever,” Jackie reflects.

Finding the right fit

When Robert approached his teenage years, Jackie and her husband, Tom, began exploring various living arrangements for his adult life. Upon turning 21, Robert and his family made the tough decision to transition him into a group home. His nine years there were marked by valuable relationships with both staff and residents.

Although Robert’s group home experience was socially positive, the residence was challenged in fulfilling his escalating care needs. Jackie visited Quest’s residential services and found them to be a promising option.

“When an opening at a Quest Home became available in 2021, it felt like a blessing,” Jackie shares. “I remember visiting him about six months after his move and noticing he was wearing glasses. Quest was so proactive in addressing his needs, I hadn’t even thought to inquire about his sight.”

A true home

Today, Robert enjoys more than just a residence; he is part of a community that empowers his independence. The home enables him to navigate comfortably in his wheelchair and engage in activities he loves, such as assembling puzzles on the porch and forming bonds with fellow residents and staff members. Robert also participates in Quest’s Training Center in Apopka, where he develops life skills and enjoys recreational activities.

Community outings are a valuable part of Robert’s life at Quest. The organization’s collaboration with Link Logistics ensures he can travel comfortably to appointments and social events, freeing him and his family from concerns about transportation challenges.

Recently, Jackie purchased a phone for Robert. It brought her joy to hear and see that he had attended a WWE game and spent time at Disney Springs. Robert’s increased independence was on full display when Jackie reached out recently. He asked the staff to let her know he would call her back later. This small detail was a major sign to Jackie that Robert was growing in his independence, something that every parent wants for their child.

“The more he’s been away from us, the more he’s learned to fit into the community,” Jackie says. “Because of Quest, I feel comfortable that he will enjoy a life that I couldn’t give him as I got older.”
