Those We Serve – Joey

Quest’s intermediate care facilities provide a nurturing environment for individuals with profound developmental disabilities. With 24-hour nursing care in a communal setting, Quest’s Laurel Hill facility has empowered Joey to grow, learn and thrive for more than 20 years.

Early obstacles

Joey was diagnosed with severe hydrocephalus at birth, a condition that presented him with unique challenges. After undergoing multiple corrective surgeries, he started an early-intervention program at the age of 3, which laid the foundation for future success.

Despite these obstacles, Joey was a joyful child. His mother, Judy, recognized her son’s lifelong need for support and worked with his doctors to explore residential options.

“Knowing how difficult it is to find placements in long-term care facilities, when the opportunity arose to live at Quest, we took it,” Judy says.

A home at Laurel Hill

The decision to move Joey to Laurel Hill was life changing. From the moment he arrived, staff and residents alike embraced him as family. At this time, he also began attending public elementary school. He continued his education through high school while living at Laurel Hill.

With the support of his family, therapists and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Joey experienced the pleasures of a traditional childhood, attending fieldtrips, football games and even prom before graduating.

Now 32, Joey continues to thrive as part of the Laurel Hill and Quest community. Although nonverbal, he communicates through expressive gestures and a vibrant personality that brings joy to everyone around him. Continuity of care has been key to Joey’s success. Many of the DSPs have worked with him for more than 20 years, creating a stable environment where he feels safe and confident.

Increased independence

As Joey has grown and his goals have shifted, the staff has adjusted with him. His DSPs help him strengthen his motor skills with ball games and puzzles. Together, they work to increase his communication skills by practicing sign language. In addition, Joey now attends Quest’s Training Center for adults with developmental disabilities during the week. Here, he participates in recreational and lifeskills activities tailored to his needs.

Judy is thankful that Joey can have successful, meaningful and enjoyable experiences that improve his quality of life.

“I would never have been able to get Joey as far developed as he is by myself,” she says. “From therapy to nursing and full-time attention, the staff has cared for him like family. He is happy, and while difficult, I know I made the right choice.”

A full life

With the love of his family and the dedicated support of the Quest staff, Joey continues to inspire everyone he meets. His journey is an example of how a supportive community can help individuals with developmental disabilities live full lives.

“Laurel Hill wouldn’t be Laurel Hill without Joey. I’m grateful that he is here, and that we can continue serving him,” says Director Nisha Hood.
