Quest’s Adult Training Centers provide comprehensive services to meet the goals of individuals with developmental disabilities. Through a blend of recreational and life-skills development activities, we empower individuals — like James — on their journeys toward independence.
James has been a cherished member of Quest’s Training Center in Apopka for seven years. The center has allowed him to thrive through opportunities to volunteer, develop skills and build meaningful relationships.
The Impact of Volunteering and Engaging in Recreational Activities
The individuals we serve often struggle to find volunteer opportunities. Through the training center, James has the chance to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank monthly. He sorts donations during the team’s shifts and shows incredible organizational skills. He has a knack for making sure everything is in its proper place.
His efforts earned him a “Volunteer Thank You Award” alongside his peers for going the extra mile — a proud moment highlighting his dedication to the community. James’ impact goes beyond volunteering. He is a beacon of support to his peers. Whether helping them grab their belongings or tidying up shared spaces, he takes the initiative to ensure everything is in order.
“James is always assisting his fellow individuals. He takes ownership of helping others, and if something is wrong, he’ll help fix it,” says Crystal Whitelaw, the activity coordinator at Quest’s Training Center in Apopka.
James also actively participates in recreational activities at the center. He loves dancing, exercising, completing puzzles, and attending community outings, especially bowling and dining at Chili’s. Exposure to these shared community activities allows participants to have enjoyable experiences that improve their quality of life.
Vocational Training: Preparing for Future Employment
The center also gives participants access to vocational training opportunities designed to prepare them for future employment. James is actively engaged in this process, working diligently on his pre-employment requisites while gaining invaluable experience.
One of the first opportunities for participants to work on pre-employment skills is at the Snack Shack in the center. The Snack Shack is a convenience store run by program participants that carries a selection of items for purchase. James has mastered unloading, organizing and stocking the products, as well as managing the store’s inventory. He travels to employment service sites monthly to broaden his understanding of workplace dynamics and responsibilities.
A Journey of Growth and Inspiration
James’ journey shows how individuals with developmental disabilities can grow and engage meaningfully in a nurturing environment. We are immensely proud of James and grateful to have him in our Quest community. His positive energy uplifts those around him, inspiring others to live with a spirit of kindness, enthusiasm and commitment.
