Those We Serve – George

by | Jan 12, 2026 | Those We Serve

At Quest, Inc., we believe meaningful work experiences can transform lives. Our employment services program partners with candidates approved for Florida Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services to provide individualized job training and placement. One of those candidates is George, who came to Quest seeking renewed purpose.

Finding the right fit

After working in management and construction manufacturing, George found himself struggling with focus, depression and anxiety. Despite his extensive experience, he faced challenges re-entering the workforce and felt discouraged by the lack of opportunities. That’s when the VR introduced him to Quest.

Working with Erin Pfaff, Quest’s employment specialist, George began his on-the-job training (OJT) at The Sharing Center. This six-to-eight-week program provides hands-on learning experiences that allow trainees to practice job duties in real-world settings.

Through its thrift store, pantry and distribution programs, The Sharing Center provides dignified solutions for individuals and families impacted by hardships, hunger and homelessness while also offering opportunities for skill-building and community connection.

For George, placement in the thrift store was transformative. He works five days a week, and his responsibilities range from cleaning and organizing clothing to assisting with vouchers and supporting customers. But for George, the tasks are only part of the story.

“Because of Quest, I’m doing something worthwhile to me. I wake up in the morning with purpose instead of dread,” George says.

Restoring faith in community

His favorite part of the job training is talking with people, hearing their stories and offering encouragement. His warm presence is felt not only by customers but also by fellow trainees. When another Quest client needed help with their role, George stepped in as a mentor, sharing thoughtful guidance and support, just like the staff had offered to him.

Becky Galic, a people services specialist at The Sharing Center, has seen the impact of these connections since the partnership with Quest one year ago. That spirit of community is what makes the environment uniquely suited to growth.

“We give back through our mission work, but we want to give back even more by continuing to help individuals with disabilities build their job skills. Our staff and volunteers love encouraging clients, and many have truly excelled here.”

Quest’s employment program is all about meeting each candidate where they are today, assessing their skills and interests, and creating individualized learning plans that lead to confidence and purpose. Candidates like George remind us that with the right support, individuals can rediscover their sense of worth and belonging.

If you or someone you know is seeking meaningful work and a supportive community, Quest is here to help. Learn more about our employment services offerings here.

George says it best: “Quest really has a way of helping restore your faith in mankind. They understood I was going through something, and they didn’t judge me.”
