Those We Serve – Chad

by | Jul 9, 2025 | Camp Thunderbird, Those We Serve

For over 25 years, Chad has attended Quest’s Camp Thunderbird, a traditional summer camp designed for adults with developmental disabilities. His journey exemplifies the core values that make camp a cherished experience for many: fostering independence, enhancing social engagement and nurturing lasting friendships.

Discovering Quest’s Camp Thunderbird

Chad discovered Camp Thunderbird in 1988, thanks to a recommendation from a family friend while living in Florida. The initial drop-off was a whirlwind of excitement and nerves for Chad as it marked the first time he would experience a summer camp away from his parents. To ease everyone into this new adventure, the family decided that Chad would attend just two sessions. Both he and his father felt comfortable with this arrangement.

From the moment he arrived, it was clear that the camp staff genuinely cared for Chad’s well-being. This strong support system gave his family peace of mind. It wasn’t long before Chad transitioned to attending camp for the full six-week summer sessions. The extended time allowed him to build independence and gave his family well-deserved respite.

“We loved it. We had no issues, and the constant communication with the staff put us at ease,” shares Bonnie, Chad’s stepmom. “Camp Thunderbird gave us time as a family without having to worry about anything.”

A Summer Tradition Building Independence

After relocating to Tennessee in 2006, the family explored local camps. However, shorter sessions made it challenging for them to travel and connect with loved ones. While the experience was positive, it was evident that Camp Thunderbird needed to remain a staple in Chad’s summer plans.

To achieve this, Chad was determined to find a way to afford his beloved camp while also adjusting to his new environment. He began working at Sunshine Services, an organization that provides person-centered support for individuals with developmental disabilities. Chad saved each year to attend Camp Thunderbird, developing a strong sense of responsibility and engagement.

This dedication played a pivotal role in his development, allowing him to experience even greater independence and confidence during his time at camp. He cherishes those moments away from home, where he feels a sense of freedom, liberated from the routines of everyday life. From engaging in sports and participating in arts and crafts to swimming and watching movies, Chad immerses himself in a wealth of activities tailored to his interests. This autonomy empowers him to take ownership of his camp experience and reinforce his personal growth.

Embodying the Camp Spirit with Each Adventure

Chad’s connections at camp have flourished as he reconnects with familiar counselors and welcomes new friends each year. He especially treasures the moments captured in the photos and crafts he gets to bring home. Each experience contributes to the cherished memories he’s building at camp.

“I hang out with everyone, and we like to talk and do different activities. I’ve met people from England, Ireland and Germany, and it’s been nice,” says Chad.

Chad’s journey is a reminder of the importance of independence and the unique joy that comes from being at Camp Thunderbird. Each summer, he embraces new adventures and the joy of a supportive community.

“Chad’s such an easy-going guy. He’s willing to try everything at camp and always has a positive attitude,” says Faye Murphy, senior director of recreation and training programs.
