Quest’s Camp Thunderbird has become a cherished tradition for adults with developmental disabilities over the past six decades. Bill, a spirited camp guest from Virginia, has been a devoted attendee of Camp Thunderbird for the past two years. New experiences, meaningful friendships, independence and positivity mark his journey at camp.
All Roads Lead to Camp Thunderbird
Bill is an avid camper who travels nationwide to try out different camps. After conducting online research and taking a proactive approach to seeking more information, he decided to attend Camp Thunderbird, which he describes as one of the best decisions he has made.
“Every camp is different. I don’t just like this camp, I love it,” Bill says.
Tailoring the Camp Experience: A Look into Bill’s Adventures
Camp Thunderbird is the first camp Bill has attended consecutively for the past two years, primarily due to its inclusive environment and choice programming. Guests tailor their stay by selecting activities based on their interests and preferences. Bill, an enthusiastic sports lover, often enjoys engaging in sports, pool time, and archery during his time at camp.
He particularly enjoys the adapted archery equipment, which adjusts to a height suitable for each guest and provides extra grip strength, allowing him to shoot the bow with just one hand. Bill also had a blast on the new giant jump pillow at camp this summer — it was an exhilarating experience for him!
Forging Meaningful Relationships at Camp
Bill’s ability to adapt to change and embrace new experiences with enthusiasm and courage has allowed him to cultivate meaningful relationships and positively impact everyone he meets at camp, especially the staff.
“Bill has the biggest smile I’ve ever seen,” says Diego, Camp Thunderbird Counselor. “It makes all of [the staff] content to see him smile all the time. He motivates us to continue through the day, and we’re thankful for that.”
Embracing Unity and Diversity with Enthusiasm
One of camp’s goals is to increase guests’ abilities to form positive relationships, and Bill appreciates the opportunity to learn from and forge bonds with others.
“Everybody doesn’t have the same abilities, but we all come together. We are a big family,” Bill says.
Bill’s infectious positivity and unwavering spirit have left a lasting impact on staff and fellow camp guests. As he wraps up another year at camp, Bill encourages others to experience the remarkable people and sense of community that define Camp Thunderbird.
“If you can travel, you must come to camp,” Bill says. “It’s a wonderful place with beautiful people.”
