With over 30 years of experience in caregiving and a background in education, Tarsheala Lester has dedicated her life to helping others. Her journey has led her to Quest, Inc., where she passionately supports individuals with developmental disabilities.
“I was a certified nursing assistant before this; I took care of my grandmother for 30-plus years,” Tarsheala says. “I was also a school teacher and a principal at a private school, so I’ve always been in the field of helping others.”
Empowering Clients Through Direct Support and Skill Development
Tarsheala has made a remarkable impact on the individuals Quest serves. She started as a direct support professional at our Intermediate Care Facilities, providing personal care and assisting non-ambulatory clients with daily living in a nurturing home environment.
Her commitment didn’t stop there; she often worked overtime at Quest’s Adult Training Center in Tampa, which supports individuals in developing life skills and engaging in recreational activities tailored to their needs.
Tailoring Instruction for Individual Needs
In August, Tarsheala transitioned to the training center full time as a skill instructor, leading various skill development programs. Through engaging recreational sessions centered around fitness, cooking, games and puzzles, she helps clients enhance their problem-solving and social skills while fostering connections.
Additionally, through the training center’s adult enrichment classes, she teaches practical life skills — like counting money, grocery shopping and handling household tasks — critical for promoting client independence. She stresses the importance of tailoring her instruction to meet her client’s needs. It’s all about starting at the highest level and adjusting based on their reactions and capabilities.
“Instilling these skills in them daily so they achieve memorization is very helpful and productive as long as it’s at a level they are capable of,” Tarsheala says. “The success is just seeing them here trying their best.”
Recognized for Excellence in Leadership
Tarsheala’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Within just a month of joining the training center, she was voted employee of the month by her peers. She also became the second-ever captain of the month, a prestigious role recognizing individuals who exemplify Quest’s mission. As team captain, she stepped up, coordinating communication and ensuring her colleagues had the resources to succeed.
Letitia Yates, program director at Quest’s Training Center, praises Tarsheala’s positive attitude and unwavering work ethic.
“Tarsheala displays leadership qualities every day. Her decision-making skills and positive attitude make her a favorite among staff and clients,” Letitia says. “She consistently strives to improve our department by giving great ideas and suggestions. She has an awesome one-on-one rapport with the clients in her care and is a great addition to our team. We are lucky to have her.”
Tarsheala’s contributions at Quest enhance clients’ lives and inspire those around her. Her journey illustrates how one can transform lives through teaching, compassion, patience and support.
