Direct support professionals (DSPs) are the frontline workforce at Quest, Inc., helping individuals with developmental disabilities lead fulfilling lives. One of these dedicated associates is Sarah Gray. She is passionate about empowering the residents at Quest’s Springs Group Home to gain independence.
Willing to serve
Sarah’s journey in the field began when her sister, who worked for a direct support organization in Tennessee, needed overnight assistance. Inspired to help, Sarah stepped in and found great joy in the work. After moving to Florida, she became a home health aide until she learned about Quest from a colleague. Four years later, her compassion for our clients shines through in everything she does.
As a DSP, Sarah is responsible for a wide range of duties, including personal care, skill-building and mobility assistance. Her incredible attention to detail enables her to provide high-quality care. She often sees herself as a cheerleader and coach, motivating residents to achieve their goals and guiding them along the way. Through active listening and observing nonverbal cues, Sarah learns each person’s unique preferences and needs, allowing her to advocate effectively.
“Individuals’ lives are pretty much in our hands,” Sarah says. “Whether it’s bathing them, brushing their teeth, getting them to their adult day program or communicating their sickness to a nurse, they depend on us, and we are accountable for them.”
Committed to empathy and creativity to change lives
Sarah’s understanding of her responsibility drives her commitment to go above and beyond, ensuring our residents receive the care and support they deserve. One moment that stands out was when one of her clients was having a tough day and refused to engage with anyone.
“Ms. Sarah, knowing the client’s love for music, brought in her portable speaker and played his favorite songs. Within minutes, he was smiling, singing along, and even dancing a little,” says Lashara Thomas, Quest’s senior director of group homes. “It was a beautiful reminder of how her empathy and creativity can turn someone’s entire day around.”
Quest recently recognized September 7-13 as Direct Support Professional Week, celebrating Sarah and all DSPs whose exceptional dedication transforms lives every day. If you’re inspired to make a difference, explore the DSP roles available at Quest.
