Team Member Highlight – Sandy Belizaire

For over 60 years, Quest, Inc. has built communities where people with developmental disabilities have a path to independence. At Quest’s Training Center in Apopka, Sandy Belizaire utilizes her passion for making a difference to further Quest’s mission.

Embracing a Fulfilling Journey from Day One

Sandy joined Quest as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) in 2007 and assisted individuals at the adult day training center and group homes. Her responsibilities ranged from personal care to mobility and meal assistance, all aimed at fostering a culture of accessibility. She immediately saw how crucial it was to help individuals master key skills that could transform their lives.

“When I went home each day, I just wanted to come back because seeing them accomplish things that might seem simple, like brushing their teeth and knowing they could do it themselves without help, brought light to each day.”

A Hands-on Approach to Empowerment

In 2014, Sandy transitioned to her current role as a skill instructor, enabling her to take a more hands-on approach to skill development. She actively facilitates, assists, and encourages program participants to engage in meaningful daily activities at the training center. Through her structured lessons and consistent encouragement, clients discover newfound capabilities that open doors to independence.

One notable success story involved a client who struggled to spell and type a password to log in to the computer skills class. Using flashcards and verbal prompting, Sandy worked with him for weeks until he mastered the skill. Now, he can confidently type in the password, participate in class, and explore various computer functions with happiness and ease.

Building Relationships and Fostering Independence

Sandy’s commitment to clients extends beyond skill instruction; she creates an environment of warmth and belonging where each individual feels valued and understood. Her interactions demonstrate a deep knowledge of each client, strengthening her ability to help them achieve their goals. Whether teaching computer skills, art or culinary lessons, each lesson serves as a launchpad for vocational, community or other life opportunities that improve participants’ quality of life.

“When we talk about frontline workers, skill instructors like Sandy welcome clients, make them feel at ease, and fill their days with laughter and purposeful activity,” says Latanya Thompson, program director at Quest’s Training Center. “Without their tireless efforts, we would struggle to function effectively.”

Sandy’s dedication to her clients is evident in the pride and motivation she draws from their progress. Each achievement, big or small, reinforces her belief in the transformative power of empowerment. Her actions demonstrate that when you uplift others, you also enrich your own life.

“I just love what I do. Quest is a good company to work for; just working with individuals and making a difference is okay with me,” Sandy says.
