The Journey to Nursing
Mark’s journey at Quest began as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) before transitioning into a nursing role.
Reflecting on his early days, Mark recalls the competitive nature of entering the nursing field, especially as a brand-new nurse. Despite the challenges, his determination and military background paved the way for his transition to nursing school.
Building Personal and Professional Connections
His resilience to serve others ultimately led him to Quest’s Training Center in Tampa. Mark’s current day-to-day responsibilities encompass setting up the nurse station, managing client attendance records, providing first aid, administering medication and maintaining open communication with caregivers.
Mark’s compassion and attention to detail shine through as he ensures that each individual’s needs are met with the utmost care and professionalism. When asked about memorable experiences throughout his tenure at Quest, he emphasizes the profound impact of being a lifelong learner.
“I get the most satisfaction, whether it was the first couple weeks at Quest or 27 years later, of knowing that I learned as much from our individuals as I’ve tried to assist them in gaining or keeping what abilities they have,” he says.
Mark has developed personal and professional connections, making work feel like home. He highlights the cohesive team culture that transcends job titles, with everyone willing to step in and support each other.
Patient Care Philosophy
His perspective on patient care is underscored by the principles of compassion, respect and a commitment to serving individuals with developmental disabilities.
“The individuals we serve are people. They have the same rights and dignities and should demand the same respect as you and I.”
Mark’s steadfast dedication to Quest and the individuals in his care is a testament to his unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. He explains that nurses must ensure all staff grasp the purpose and reasons behind each client’s specific care delivery methods. Their understanding and commitment are integral to our client’s well-being.
“One of our primary goals is to keep the individuals we serve as happy, healthy and independent as possible for as long as possible,” he says.
Years of Purpose and Commitment
Mark’s journey inspires and embodies empathy, teamwork and a genuine passion for providing exceptional care. As Quest continues to uphold its mission of helping individuals with developmental disabilities experience a full life, Mark reminds us of the profound impact that dedicated individuals can make within the organization.
