At Quest Inc., we take pride in a team that embodies passion, respect, excellence and solution-oriented thinking. Skill Instructor Makesha Robinson exemplifies these values both in and out of Quest’s Training Center in Tampa.
An Innate Desire to Help Others and Build Skills to Increase Impact
Inspired by her mother, a doctor, and her aspiration to become a nurse, Makesha’s introduction to the field began through hospital volunteering. After becoming a certified nursing assistant, she ventured into group homes and quickly obtained her supported living and job coach certificates. Ultimately, she pursued her solo provider license to offer home health and pediatric care.
Eager to share her 23 years of experience, Makesha joined Quest’s Training Center in Tampa as a part-time on-call employee nearly two years ago. She quickly took the initiative to help wherever necessary. This proactive attitude facilitated her transition to a full-time skill instructor position.
“From getting safety care trained to now driving our company vehicles for client transports, Makesha has embraced every additional training opportunity. She’s incredibly involved with our clients in every way possible,” says Nicole Lam, program director at Quest’s Training Center.
Fostering Connections and Sharing Resources
As a skill instructor, Makesha prioritizes participants’ quality of care, safety and supervision while facilitating skill development programs. She connects with clients by discussing their weekends and engaging in activities in the game room or culinary classes. Her commitment to their well-being goes beyond her daily tasks.
Whether decorating for birthdays, organizing pizza parties or brainstorming ways to help participants attend church services, Makesha strives to make every day special. Recognizing that opportunities for social and community outings can be limited, she also donates tickets to local events, such as theme parks and basketball games.
“It feels great to see our participants smiling and happy because many of them don’t have the chance to enjoy these experiences,” Makesha says. “I think it’s important when you have access to resources to share them because it brings joy.”
The Importance of Giving Grace and Showing Respect
With continued encouragement, Makesha has noticed a significant shift in the participants’ attitudes, resulting in greater involvement in the diverse activities available at the center. She has observed them taking the initiative to participate in various outings and events, demonstrating increased comfort and excitement toward new experiences.
Makesha understands that even on challenging days, offering participants positive and respectful guidance is essential. She extends this supportive approach to her colleagues, readily offering assistance and encouragement whenever needed.
“You have to give everybody grace and treat them how you or a loved one would want to be treated. You never know what someone else is going through, and being a team player makes a significant difference in our daily work,” she explains.
Makesha’s approach embodies the spirit of the Quest community. Her enthusiasm for helping others and her innovative approach helps foster a positive and respectful atmosphere for staff and participants. We thank Makesha for exemplifying our core values and mission of helping individuals with developmental disabilities live full lives.
