Quest’s Training Center in Apopka is excited to announce its new director, Latanya Thompson. With nearly two decades of experience in rehabilitation services and Medicaid waiver support, Latanya brings a wealth of experience to the center.
Advocating for Underserved Populations
Latanya is a people person who is deeply passionate about the individuals we serve. She recounts how her college years opened her eyes to the rewarding nature of working with underserved populations. Latanya’s internships at drug-free living centers and her work with organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA have prepared her for the role at the Training Center in Apopka.
“People in underserved populations often tend to get ignored, and there is nothing like feeling like you’re a part of something,” she says. “We can’t forget that even though someone might not have a voice or a way to communicate their needs and desires, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist.”
Fostering Client-Centered Communication
Latanya emphasizes the importance of open communication with clients, which helps her understand and serve their needs effectively. Her top priority is finding new ways to increase client engagement. She aims to foster strong relationships between staff and clients, where meaningful interactions occur more frequently.
“From the time [clients] walk in until they leave, it’s about making sure they feel welcome and that we’re interested in their lives even beyond the center,” she says. “We want to motivate and encourage clients to be as independent as possible in a fun way.”
Recognizing Positive Attributes of Clients and Staff
Latanya’s commitment to fostering stronger relationships between staff and clients has led to implementing “Feel Good Fridays,” a practice in which she publicly recognizes a client or staff member for a positive attribute she observes.
The center has already felt the positive impact of Latanya’s enthusiasm. She is dedicated to creating a supportive and engaging environment for all. Quest looks forward to seeing an even brighter future for the center under her leadership.
