At Quest, Inc., Qualified Intellectual Disability Professionals (QIDPs) play a crucial role at our Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs). They ensure that medically-complex individuals with developmental disabilities receive the active treatment, health care and quality of life they deserve. Kristina is one of these dedicated professionals and has spent the past six years creating a nurturing environment that empowers residents to live a full life.

Getting to know people beyond paper

Originally from Illinois, Kristina’s passion for helping others inspired her to earn a degree in psychology, with a minor in English. She began her career in a psychiatric hospital, where she gained three years of invaluable experience before transitioning to an ICF for children. What started as a temporary position evolved into a remarkable 26-year commitment, laying the groundwork for her extensive expertise in the field.

In 2018, Kristina moved to Florida and briefly worked as a direct support professional (DSP) at a group home before joining Quest in 2019 as a QIDP. A central component of her role involves developing Individual Program Plans — detailed documents that outline goals, services and supports tailored for individuals with developmental disabilities. Kristina emphasizes the significance of getting to know residents on a personal level beyond just the documentation.

“You can’t encapsulate a person on paper,” Kristina explains. “Every individual is unique, and it’s my mission to understand them, figure out what makes them happy and help them thrive.”

Creating a sense of home

Many residents come to the facility facing challenging circumstances, often beyond their control. Kristina is determined to create a sense of home and comfort for them. She collaborates closely with families, therapists and DSPs who provide hands-on support, fostering greater independence for the individuals at Quest’s Laurel Hill ICF.

Families provide essential background information that supports advocacy, while the dedicated staff implement the programs Kristina designs. She counts on them to diligently document goals and alert her to any hurdles or new challenges that may arise.

Kristina incorporates individualized, enjoyable activities to motivate residents and ensure the success of their customized plans. A memorable case involved utilizing matchbox cars to develop fine motor skills. The routine capitalized on the resident’s passion for cars to drive purposeful engagement. Because the goal was rooted in something he genuinely loved, the individual not only enjoyed the activity but continued with it long after the goal was reached.

“We’re not just about building skills; we’re about enriching lives and affirming the right to choose, just like everyone else. Discovering what residents enjoy is a key part of our mission, and empowering them to pursue those interests is essential,” Kristina asserts.
