Quest’s Training Center in Apopka hosted a Rodeo Round-Up event that united clients, staff and volunteers in a day of fun, laughter and shared activities. Organized by the center’s Activity Coordinator, Crystal Whitelaw, the event fostered a sense of community for everyone involved.

Creating a Western Rodeo Atmosphere

The theme for the day was a western rodeo. All attendees fully embraced it, showing up in cowboy hats, boots and vests. The center was transformed with western-themed decor and giant balloon displays, setting the stage for an exciting day.

“I’m so grateful to work with someone so dedicated and creative. Crystal can do it all,” says Frances Torres, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Quest, Inc. “Our learners look forward to big events. There’s a buildup as the clients see decorations go up gradually, and they start making suggestions about indoor activities and party music.”

Activities, Entertainment and Prizes Galore

The suggestions led to indoor activities with a wide range of entertainment, including airbrush tattoos, ring toss, beanbag tossing, milking the cow race and digging for gold in kinetic sand. The live DJ playing country hits added a lively atmosphere, with attendees enthusiastically joining in on the dancing.

A highlight of the day was the system of earning points, represented by cards on clothespins. Clients earned points at each activity station that could be cashed in for exciting prizes, adding an element of friendly competition. The prizes included rodeo/western-themed items, stuffed animals and more. Outdoor activities including the dunk tank and inflatable basketball created a perfect balance of indoor and outdoor entertainment.

Fostering Inclusivity through Events

The Rodeo Round-Up was a testament to the importance of creating events that cater to client interests. It allowed them to participate in fun activities, build friendships and boost their confidence. The Westgate Foundation volunteers joined for the first time, interacting with clients and seeing the offerings available at the training center.

“Planning community events for adults with developmental disabilities is crucial in promoting inclusivity in the community,” says Crystal. “By organizing these events, we can create a more connected, supportive and fun environment for adults on the spectrum.”
