“What’s our next step?”
That question became far too familiar during the first years of our son’s journey. As parents, we had to set aside our pride and embrace our roles as advocates, learners and teammates.
After a visit to the neurologist and numerous uncertain conversations, we were introduced to the idea of early intervention. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy was described to us — not as a quick fix, but as a pathway to a more effective approach. It was a bridge to help our son find communication, connection and confidence.
At that time, he was nonverbal. His eyes spoke volumes, and our days were filled with moments of trial, error and hope. Starting therapy felt overwhelming, but it also provided us with direction and the beginning of a plan.
The power of ABA Therapy
ABA therapy became a vital element of our son’s daily routine. Consistency was key, even on the toughest days. There were tears, refusals and setbacks, but also sparks of progress that kept us moving forward.
We celebrated each milestone: the first time he pointed to an object, the first moment of genuine eye contact and the first sound that blossomed into a word. What might seem small to others was monumental for us.
Through repetition, patience and the dedication of therapists and teachers, our son began to build a foundation for communication. The process took time, but brick by brick, he was learning to find his voice.
Today, in first grade, he is not just verbal —he is expressive. He asks questions, tells stories and shares laughter. The child who once relied on gestures now uses words to build friendships and let his personality shine.
His achievements are measured not just by grades but by the confidence, independence and joy he brings to every space he enters. The road wasn’t easy, but it shaped him —and us — to be stronger.
Progress is Possible
Our son’s journey exemplifies the power of intervention, consistency and unconditional love. For parents embarking on their own journeys, his story serves as a reminder: progress is possible, and every step matters.
