Julie Advocates for the Life She Deserves and Desires

Julie has been a Quest, Inc. community member for 20 years. Her journey highlights our belief that a developmental disability should not limit anyone from leading a fulfilling life.

Embracing the Power of Self-Advocacy While Building Connections

Residing at one of Quest’s Orlando group homes, Julie engages in meaningful activities that promote lifelong learning, healthy lifestyles, personal growth and community involvement. Known affectionately as the “diva of the house,” Julie naturally takes on a leadership role to ensure the household runs smoothly.

Lashara Thomas, senior director of group homes programs, shares, “Julie tells everyone what needs to be done, including the staff, whom she pulls aside to help with her Amazon shopping. She is never shy about voicing her opinions, needs and wants.”

Self-advocacy is a crucial part of Julie’s life. She appreciates the ability to express her preferences at home while learning about community responsibility.

“I like that I can color in my room, watch TV, and set the table when it’s my turn. It makes me feel good to help,” Julie says.

She also values social interaction and enjoys spending time with her housemates. Her innate ability to actively listen and remember details helps her build trust and respect in her relationships.

Overcoming Barriers and Remaining Joyful Through Challenges

Julie brings that wit and emotional intelligence to Quest’s Adult Day Training Center in Apopka. During her time in the program, she receives recreational and life-skills development activities that meet her changing needs and goals. She embraces leisure and shared activities with her friends. Shanna Berrian, the center’s staffing and operations coordinator, has followed Julie’s journey for the past decade.

“Julie likes to engage with everyone. Her spirits are high, and she enjoys herself — always giving compliments and looking fabulous. She loves to cook, learn new tasks and go on every community outing,” Shanna says.

Julie remains undeterred by the frequent limitations or unavailability of community outings for the individuals we serve. She is the first to express her desire to take advantage of every opportunity to participate. Her determination shone through even during her battle with breast cancer and transition to a wheelchair.

“Julie fights with grace, so you would never know what she has been through,” Shanna says. “She is a proud breast cancer survivor. Coming home from surgeries, Julie was still bubbly, telling everyone how happy she was to see them, wanting to draw and go out in the community. Nothing holds her back. She is ready to go.”

We are proud and inspired by Julie’s resolve to live the life she deserves and desires. Through her actions and attitude, she advocates for herself and encourages others to embrace life fully, regardless of obstacles.
