Disability Independence Day: Advancing Access to Employment

by | Jul 25, 2025 | Employment Services, Quest Culture

July 26 marks National Disability Independence Day, commemorating the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. This landmark legislation was a revolutionary step in prohibiting discrimination based on disability and establishing access and inclusion across the United States.

Statistics Show a Gap in Employment Opportunities

As we observe this milestone, it’s essential to highlight the ongoing need for employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. According to the National Core Indicators Report, 81% of individuals with developmental disabilities remain unemployed. This stark statistic underscores the urgent need for greater investment in programs that facilitate employment for those with disabilities.

Employment is a cornerstone of independence, enabling individuals to contribute to society, support themselves and build self-esteem. At Quest, Inc., we empower individuals with developmental disabilities through comprehensive employment services that create pathways to meaningful work.

“When we treat individuals with developmental disabilities like normal people who are valuable members of our communities, deserving full participation in all aspects of life, it’s a win-win for all of us,” says John R. Gill, president and CEO of Quest.

While the ADA has improved access and protections, the journey toward full employment equity is far from over.

Quest’s Commitment to Disability Employment

To address this gap, Quest offers tailored solutions for individuals and businesses. We partner with candidates approved for Florida’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) to create individualized job placement and learning plans aligned with their skills and interests.

Quest offers community-based employment with varying levels of job coaching based on a candidate’s needs and strengths.

Continued Advocacy and Support

While Quest remains dedicated to advancing employment opportunities, this work requires a collective effort. We encourage everyone to advocate for inclusion and acceptance, break down barriers, and raise awareness about the capabilities of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Myths surrounding disability employment — such as the cost of accommodations or assumptions about performance — must be dispelled as we embrace the reality that individuals with developmental disabilities can perform just as well as their peers.

As we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the ADA, let us remember that promoting equal employment opportunities is not just a legal obligation but a societal responsibility. By supporting individuals in their quest for employment, we strengthen our communities and enrich lives.
