Autism Acceptance Month is a time to celebrate the strength and diversity of individuals on the autism spectrum. It also provides an opportunity to proactively promote acceptance and inclusion while helping people find support services.
Facts and Figures: Understanding the Impact and Challenging the Stereotypes
According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects 1 in 31 children, making it the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States. Characteristics of the disorder vary from person to person, and several factors may influence its development. Additionally, the diagnosis can affect sensory sensitivities, social skills, fine motor skills and self-regulation.
A few misconceptions about individuals with autism are that they have exceptional memory skills or, on the opposite extreme, that they can’t learn. It is also misunderstood that individuals on the spectrum do not experience the full range of emotions or that autism is an epidemic. One of the key objectives to promote acceptance is to challenge stereotypes. Instead of viewing autism as a disorder that needs curing, it’s crucial to recognize it as a different way of perceiving and experiencing the world. By educating ourselves and others about the diversity of the autism spectrum, we can create a more inclusive environment where everyone can live full lives.
Support, Advocacy and ABA at Quest
Quest, Inc. offers services and programs tailored to the needs of individuals on the spectrum. At Quest Kids Therapy, we support children and teens with autism and related disabilities using applied behavior analysis (ABA). Quest Kids Academy also offers a customized education experience for students (K-12) using ABA.
ABA is used to develop various skills to help children reach milestones throughout their lives. It can also decrease behaviors that interfere with learning and daily living. The American Academy of Pediatrics and U.S. Surgeon General recommend ABA, and Medicaid and specific private health insurance plans now cover it.
