Quest, Inc. builds communities where people with developmental disabilities achieve their goals. Quest has allowed Arthur and Tammy to experience love and skill development opportunities in a supportive environment.
Quest Provides the Means for Relationships to Thrive
Arthur and Tammy have been married for 24 years. In 2019, the couple transitioned to living at Quest’s Group Homes for options to participate in meaningful activities promoting education and a healthy lifestyle. Growing accustomed to assuming personal and community responsibility, they also decided to attend Quest’s Adult Training Center in Apopka.
Through participation in the program, they have gained access to recreational opportunities and life-skills development, allowing them to experience a full life. Though Tammy and Arthur are both deaf and nonverbal, daily shared activities have deepened their bond, proving that love knows no barriers.
“You can see the love there without voice. Arthur cares for her and makes sure she has everything she needs. He’s the ultimate caregiver,” says Shanna Berrian, staffing and operations coordinator at Quest’s Training Center in Apopka.
Tammy reciprocates the love by utilizing her ASL and writing abilities to advocate for enriching experiences for herself and Arthur. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or their anniversary, she conveys their desire to celebrate their love meaningfully through her tablet or cell phone. The staff can accommodate these requests through customized opportunities, focusing on social development.
Experiencing Life Together Through Social Development Opportunities
From joyous holiday parties to delightful outings at places like Disney Springs and Funspot, the center encourages them and other couples to explore the joys of life together. During their visit to Funspot, the staff witnessed how in sync Arthur was with Tammy. Their exposure to this area of community life highlights the importance of shared adventures that allow people to create lasting memories.
“They strolled through the park together, and it was so amazing because Tammy pulled her wheelchair up to see him get on different rides; it was like she could enjoy them with him,” Shanna says. “It was good to have them go out and enjoy themselves and do things that everybody else can do.”
Empowering Success: Arthur Also Gains Valuable Vocational Skills
In addition to love and leisure, vocational skill development is another area in which Arthur has focused his efforts. Noticing his commitment to taking care of his wife, housemates and surroundings, the staff helped Arthur become involved in the Enclave program at the center.
According to the State of Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, the Enclave program allows groups of two to eight individuals with disabilities to work together in integrated, monitored settings. This initiative aligns individuals’ tangible skills with practical jobs, nurturing their professional growth.
Arthur actively participates in light janitorial work at the center. Despite being nonverbal and deaf, Arthur communicates effectively through routine and initiative, often taking the lead without instruction. His positive attitude and consistent willingness to help significantly impact his peers. When Arthur is absent, his colleagues immediately feel his absence. They recognize him as a dependable and uplifting presence, contributing through physical tasks and enriching the community spirit.
“Quest has allowed Arthur to express what he wants. He wants to work, and we’ve allowed him to work and have a social and romantic life. I’ve seen his progression over the years,” Shanna says.
Tammy Receives the Community Inclusion She Desires
Tammy thrives on community inclusion, and the training center has allowed her access to this area of life that is often limited to individuals with developmental disabilities. She enjoys shopping or visiting museums, where she can immerse herself in the fascinating history of different monuments.
Her caring nature and helpful demeanor stand out on and off-site. She actively engages with staff during emergencies and remains vigilant to others’ needs. Like Arthur, Tammy has expressed her desire to find a job and be more active in her community, and the staff looks forward to helping her reach her goals.
