Before finding his place at Quest, Inc., Prentice received services from another organization supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he stopped attending and remained home. After four years, his parents sought a fresh opportunity that would allow Prentice to experience moments of independence.
Discovering the Perfect Fit at Quest
As they explored their options, Prentice’s parents focused on adult day training programs that could enhance his understanding of finances and communication. After an extensive search, they discovered Quest’s Training Center in Tampa and instantly knew it was the perfect fit.
“When we went to other places, they were very quiet,” said Scott, Prentice’s dad. “The center was not loud, but the [attendees] interacted with one another, the teachers were very loving, and Prentice, a good judge of character, went up and hugged a few of the teachers. So, we knew this was a good fit.”
Recreational Opportunities Contribute to Prentice’s Growing Independence
Since joining the center six months ago, Prentice has seamlessly integrated into the community. He displays incredible enthusiasm for recreational activities and a newfound level of independence. While he consistently demonstrates initiative at home with his parents, staff members were pleasantly surprised by how quickly he embraced his autonomy at the center.
One of the highlights of Prentice’s journey has been his growing independence in daily tasks. From preparing his lunch to voluntarily assisting staff members, he has embraced a transformative sense of self-reliance that inspires everyone.
He actively participates in activities, including fitness sessions, art classes, cooking workshops and games. His love for diverse experiences shows his willingness to explore aspects of community life that are often limited or unavailable to individuals with developmental disabilities.
“Prentice enjoys everything that he does here, and he looks forward to it when he gets up in the morning,” Scott says. “[The center] plays an active role in his life, and we love it because he’s an active man. The curriculum they’ve created for him and all the others here is very suitable.”
Building Connections and Making an Impact
Prentice has become an integral part of the social scene at the center. He actively engages with his peers, offering high-fives and fostering a genuine sense of belonging within his group. His enthusiasm extends beyond the center’s walls, particularly during volunteer opportunities with Meals on Wheels. His excitement in delivering packed lunches to seniors speaks to his character, as he is always eager to help others.
Programs and services at Quest’s Training Centers are designed to encourage independence while providing the essential support and structure needed for skill development. Prentice is a remarkable example of how the training center fosters independence through its nurturing and supportive environment.
