Those We Serve – Darrell

by | Jun 10, 2025 | Quest Kids Academy, Those We Serve

Four years ago, Darrell embarked on a new chapter at Quest Kids Academy (QKA) after years of attending another school and receiving applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy. Significant changes in his life and the school administration prompted a search for a fresh start. His mother, Ambah, learned about QKA through a friend and felt hopeful after conducting her own research. Reaching out to the school was the pivotal moment their lives needed.

“Had I known the school existed before, Darrell would have never gone to any other school. He would have started here when we first moved to Orlando 10 years ago. Quest is amazing,” said Ambah.

As Darrell settled into QKA, his development was immediately apparent. The dedicated staff worked collaboratively with Darrell and his family to understand his specific needs. From there, staff provided a structured curriculum and resources to ensure an effective, enjoyable educational experience. Within this inclusive and supportive environment, Darrell thrived.

Building Essential Skills Through Work-Study and Volunteer Opportunities

A significant highlight of his journey was joining the work-study program offered at Quest Kids Academy. Here, the staff emphasized the vocational and social skills necessary for a meaningful transition into adulthood. Darrell gained hands-on experience by participating in work training opportunities at Blossom Artisanal, a social venture founded by Quest. At Blossom, he worked alongside other staff to run each phase of the business, from producing soaps and candles to packaging and sales.

Darrell also volunteered with organizations like Second Harvest Food Bank and Clean the World, focusing on community integration. During these opportunities, he refined his task stamina and developed his interpersonal and leadership skills. Understanding that these new experiences could be challenging, he provided his peers in the work-study program with support, kindness and optimism. It was important to him that everyone maintain a positive outlook about the potential that lay ahead.

Erin Hennessy, youth employment specialist and work-study lead, praised Darrell as a natural leader and team player.

“Darrell is always willing to lend a helping hand. He makes friends everywhere he goes, supports his peers and finds joy in everything he does. He truly rises to any occasion when given the chance,” Erin said.

Preparing for the Future: Darrell’s Post Graduation Plans

Now, as one of two students in the 2025 QKA graduating class, Darrell is ready to embark on the next chapter of his life — adulthood. His immediate plans include collaborating with Quest’s Employment Services to pursue vocational opportunities. As a job candidate, Darrell will meet with the Employment Services team to evaluate his skills and interests. Together, they will create a personalized learning or job placement plan to enhance his abilities and growth potential.

During his graduation remarks, Darrell reflected, “I am truly grateful for it all. Without everything I’ve been through, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I’m thankful for the lessons learned and the memories created. Of all the schools I’ve attended, QKA has been the best.”

Darrell’s journey at QKA exemplifies resilience, growth and the power of a supportive community. We look forward to all that he will accomplish as he steps into the next phase of his life.
