Obtaining a Florida State ID is an important milestone for young adults, even if they do not plan to get a learner’s permit or driver’s license. A State ID can help individuals access services, participate more independently in the community and prepare for employment opportunities.
A Florida State ID can be useful for:
- Employment and Vocational Rehabilitation services
- Community volunteer opportunities
- Medical appointments
- Air travel and other forms of identification
- Accessing government services and benefits
Quest Kids Academy recommends obtaining a State ID when children turn 15 or 16 years old, especially as they begin participating in Pre-Employment Transition Services such as Work-Based Learning Experiences and Career Camps.
How to Apply
State IDs can be obtained through your local County Tax Collector’s Office or Driver License Service Center. First-time applicants must apply in person and bring:
- Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or valid passport
- Proof of Social Security number, such as a Social Security card
- Two proofs of Florida residency (documents may be in a parent’s name), such as:
- Utility bill
- Lease or rental agreement
- Mortgage statement
- Voter registration card
- Bank statement
- Any legal name change documents, if applicable
Optional Developmental Disability Designation
Families may also want to request the optional “D” designation for Developmental Disability on their child’s Florida State ID. This voluntary designation is intended to help alert law enforcement officers and first responders that an individual has a developmental disability and may benefit from additional support during interactions or emergencies.
This designation may be especially helpful for individuals who:
- Have difficulty communicating during stressful situations
- Experience anxiety when interacting with unfamiliar people
- Process instructions differently
- Benefit from additional patience and understanding during emergencies
To receive the designation, families must complete the required state form and obtain certification from a licensed physician. A link to the form can be found here.
Obtaining a State ID is a simple but important step that can support employment, self-advocacy, community participation and personal safety. Even if driving is not part of your teen’s future plans, having a State ID can help prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities of adulthood.
