Autism Acceptance Month is a time to celebrate the strengths and diversity of individuals on the autism spectrum. It also provides an opportunity to promote acceptance and inclusion while connecting individuals and families with valuable support services. By examining autism in the United States today, we can better understand why National Autism Acceptance Month matters.

Understanding the Impact and Challenging the Stereotypes

Autism spectrum disorder is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, learns and experiences the world. Traits of the disorder vary from person to person, and several factors may influence its development. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects 1 in 31 children.

As autism diagnoses have increased, so has public awareness. In recent years, however, many advocates have shifted the conversation from autism awareness to acceptance. Acceptance means creating a society that values, includes and supports individuals on the spectrum. One barrier to acceptance is the persistence of stereotypes about autism.

Common misconceptions often include:

  • Believing autism means having exceptional memory skills
  • Thinking individuals with autism can’t learn
  • Assuming people on the spectrum do not feel a range of emotions
  • Claiming autism is an epidemic

When misconceptions are challenged, opportunities for inclusion grow. Individuals
