APD Medicaid Waiver: What Families Need to Know

Planning for your child’s future starts earlier than many families realize. One of the most valuable resources available to individuals with developmental disabilities in Florida is the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Medicaid Waiver, often called Med Wavier or APD Funding. Med Waiver is Florida’s main funding source for adults with developmental disabilities but can also fund many services for children and youth. It is designed to help people with developmental disabilities receive services in their homes and community rather than in the large institutions of the past.

Why Early Application Matters

Individuals often wait seven or more years for funding. As such, Quest recommends applying for funding as soon as possible, even if you don’t currently need services. Applying early can help secure a place on the waitlist and can help your child access support when they need it. When it comes to funding, it’s always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

APD can fund a wide range of services and supports that can help your child experience a full and meaningful life. While many funded services may not be needed until your child reaches adulthood, some of these services could be very beneficial for all students. Services are dependent on a person’s needs but could include:

• Option 2: Submit a Paper Application
  • Complete a paper application and mail or deliver it to your local APD office.
  • Note: Faxed applications and supporting documents are not accepted.

After You Apply

1. Submit documentation supporting your child’s diagnosis and eligibility.
2. Work with your local APD office throughout the eligibility review process.
3. Respond promptly to any requests for additional information.
4. Keep copies of all documentation submitted.
