A Month Behind the Lens: My Camp Thunderbird Photography Experience

This summer, I had the opportunity to complete my on-the-job training (OJT) with Quest, Inc., assisting in the Marketing & Communications Department. One of my primary responsibilities was photographing activities at Quest’s Camp Thunderbird. As someone who had never worked in a camp setting before, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Looking back, the experience was a great learning opportunity and a memorable personal journey.

First Impressions of Camp Life

From my very first day, I was struck by the natural beauty surrounding the camp. The peaceful atmosphere each Monday morning created a welcoming environment that felt different from any place I had worked before. As I became familiar with the camp guests, I noticed the variety of personalities that made the camp community unique. Some guests were quiet and reserved, while others were energetic and outgoing, but each person contributed to the positive spirit of the camp.

Capturing Moments That Matter

What I enjoy most about photography is capturing genuine moments. At times I would have guests pose, or photograph them naturally as they participated in activities, played with friends, and interacted with staff.

Throughout the summer, I photographed a variety of activities, but some of my favorites took place at the basketball court, playground, archery range, and swimming pool. These locations were full of energy, laughter, and opportunities to capture guests enjoying themselves and trying new things.

Of course, photography came with challenges. There were times when I missed the perfect moment or realized I had taken a picture a second too early or too late. As the weeks progressed, however, I became more confident and assertive with my camera, improving my ability to anticipate and capture memorable moments as they happened.

Lessons Learned from the Camp Guests

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was observing the guests and learning from them. Their resilience, determination, and ability to navigate challenges inspired me throughout my time at camp. Despite facing obstacles, they approached activities with enthusiasm and a willingness to participate, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and acceptance.

Most guests were excited to have their photographs taken, while a few preferred to stay out of the spotlight. Respecting their comfort levels taught me the importance of patience, observation, and creating a positive experience for everyone involved.

The People Who Make Camp Special

One thing that stood out to me was the relationship between the guests and staff. The staff worked hard to ensure that everyone felt safe, included, and supported throughout each activity. Their dedication helped create an environment where guests could be themselves and enjoy new experiences with confidence.

I also witnessed moments that reflected the camp’s values of acceptance and community. Seeing guests encourage one another and form friendships reminded me why programs like this are so important. The positive interactions between guests and staff are what truly make the camp experience special.

Favorite Memories Behind the Camera

One of my favorite photographs captured a camper wrapping her arms around a staff member in a hug. It was a simple but powerful moment that demonstrated the trust and connection that develop through the camp experience.

There were also plenty of funny moments. One that still makes me smile is when a camper playfully held bunny ears behind a staff member while they posed for a photo. Moments like these reminded me that some of the best photographs happen unexpectedly.

Personal Growth Through Photography

This experience helped me develop both technical photography skills and greater confidence behind the camera. It taught me that great photography is about more than taking pictures. It is about observing, understanding people, and being ready to capture authentic moments when they happen.

My time at camp has also encouraged me to continue learning more about photography and exploring opportunities within the media and marketing field. What began as an OJT assignment became an experience that strengthened my skills and expanded my interests.

Looking Back

If I had to describe my experience in three words, they would be inspiring, appreciative, and amazing. Spending a month at camp challenged me, taught me new skills, and allowed me to witness moments of joy, friendship, and personal growth.

To future camp guests and their families, I would say that Camp Thunderbird offers a safe, fun, and welcoming environment where guests can learn, grow, and create lasting memories. For other interns considering a similar opportunity, it is a wonderful chance to gain experience while developing valuable skills in media and marketing.

The memory I will carry with me the longest is my very first camp experience and the opportunity it gave me to grow as a photographer. The moments I captured through my lens will always remind me of the people, friendships, and experiences that made this summer memorable.
