As summer winds down, guests pack up their bags and reflect on the lifelong memories made at Quest’s Camp Thunderbird for adults with developmental disabilities.
Fun-Filled Activities and Immersive Theme Weeks
Camp Thunderbird encourages guests to choose activities based on personal interests and preferences. Throughout eight weeks of camp, they experienced archery, shelter building, dancing, pillow jumping, hammocking, pool time and much more.
Each day brimmed with excitement and laughter as guests participated in talent shows, foam parties or water games. Staff members also integrated themed activities into the weekly schedule, from Heroes vs. Villains mask making and Sci-Fi to Harry Potter scavenger hunts and holiday-themed games during Holiday Week.
Community Engagement Shines Through New Volunteer Initiative
This year, Quest, Inc. launched the Sponsor & Serve volunteer initiative, which brought the community closer to camp guests to showcase Quest’s impactful work firsthand. This initiative welcomed groups like The Rotary Club of Maitland and Rum Runners BBQ to serve camp guests and staff.
These efforts provided a valuable reprieve for the kitchen staff, allowing them to enjoy a meal alongside their fellow team members and camp guests instead of handling meal preparation and service. It also permitted leadership to utilize funds for other essential requirements over the summer.
Giving Thanks to Camp Thunderbird’s Staff Members
Each year, Camp Thunderbird hosts diverse, hardworking, compassionate team members worldwide, from the UK and Poland to Columbia, New Zealand and beyond. Each team member not only makes a lasting impact on camp guests but leaves with a deeper understanding of themselves.
“Our guests truly leave with a higher sense of pride in who they are,” said Diego, a returning camp counselor. “They know they are cared for and have a positive outlook in their feeling of importance in the world.”
Over 50 Years of Unforgettable Summers
Quest has proudly hosted Camp Thunderbird for 55 years; this summer was no exception. For many families, 24-hour caregiving limits opportunities for self-care. Having their loved ones attend Camp Thunderbird offered much-needed respite as parents and guardians had a chance to relax, spend time with friends or take a vacation while knowing their loved one was receiving quality care and attention
Reflecting on the Camp Thunderbird season-ending, Meggie Hall, camp assistant program director, said, “It’s bittersweet. Summer is the best part of the year. It is a joy and privilege to help our guests get a break and have fun at camp.”
The Camp Thunderbird team eagerly anticipates reconnecting with returning guests and welcoming new camp guests in the upcoming year!
