Those We Serve – Christine

by | Jul 12, 2022 | Those We Serve

Christine moved to Orlando from the Virgin Islands at 15 after her mother passed away. She’s been coming to Quest’s Training Center in Apopka for the past six years, where she’s learned a variety of skills that have increased her independence.

“At the Training Center, I’ve learned to cook my own meals, use the computer and I really enjoy doing art with my friends,” said Christine.

She is currently in an on-site, supported work program where she performs light custodial duties around the center.

“Having a job means I can be independent. I have an apartment and I’m able to get what I need and spend my own money,” said Christine.

According to Mona Erickson, Christine’s Supported Work Supervisor, “The work program teaches Christine how to depend on and provide for herself. She lives on her own and does everything for herself — cooking, cleaning, going into the community and shopping as well. Our team guides her along the way while she’s here.”

Another huge benefit to the Training Center is the ability for participants to socialize. “I have a lot of friends here. They’re nice people and when they need help, I help them and they all have good personalities,” said Christine.

“People often see those with disabilities as different,” says Mona. “What many people don’t realize is that these folks can adapt and become independent in a lot of ways. They may need help now and again, but not all the time.”
