Autism Acceptance Month is a time to celebrate the strengths and abilities of individuals on the autism spectrum while promoting understanding and acceptance. It is an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning conditions can vary widely from person to person. Common traits include challenges with social communication, repetitive behaviors and sensory sensitivities. Instead of viewing autism as a disorder that needs curing, it’s crucial to recognize it as a different way of perceiving and experiencing the world.

Challenging Stereotypes: Promoting Education

A few misconceptions about individuals with autism are that they have exceptional memory skills or, on the opposite extreme, that they can’t learn.

Many people also assume that individuals on the spectrum lack empathy or social skills when, in fact, they may have a different way of expressing themselves. They may struggle with communication, sensory overload and social cues that seem obvious to others.

One of the key objectives is to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions. By educating ourselves and others about the diversity of the autism spectrum, we can create a more inclusive environment for individuals with autism to live a full life.

Facts and Figures: Understanding the Impact

According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects 1 in 36 children in the United States. It greatly varies from person to person, and several factors may influence its development. Additionally, sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures and mental health challenges often accompany autism.

Offering Support at Quest

Quest, Inc. provides services and programs tailored to the needs of individuals on the spectrum. At Quest Kids Therapy, we support children and teens with autism and related disabilities using applied behavior analysis (ABA). Quest Kids Academy also offers a customized education experience for students (K-12) using ABA.

We Offer Expert Guidance in:

  • Early intervention services for autism spectrum disorders
  • Toilet training & personal hygiene
  • Motor skills development
  • Communication
  • Social skills development
  • Life skills development
  • Health and Safety

ABA Benefits

ABA is used to develop various skills to help children reach milestones throughout their lives. It can also decrease behaviors that interfere with learning and daily living. The American Academy of Pediatrics and U.S. Surgeon General recommend ABA, and Medicaid and specific private health insurance plans now cover it.

Embracing Neurodiversity: A Brighter Future

Raising awareness and promoting acceptance of autism is an ongoing effort that requires collective action. Accepting individuals for who they are can create more accommodating, supportive and inclusive environments.

Quest’s Camp Thunderbird, providing a classic summer camp experience for adults with developmental disabilities for over 50 years, will now serve children thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Universal Orlando Foundation. The grant is part of the Foundation’s “Celebration of Giving,” supporting local nonprofits fostering positive impact in the community.

The funds helped create year-round opportunities for children with and without developmental disabilities to experience the joy and adventure of camp life in an inclusive environment. The first offering for children begins March 18 at Spring Break Camp for children ages 7-17. Campers will enjoy classic summer camp activities like canoeing, archery and swimming with options for sports and games, arts and crafts, and STEM projects.

Other programs throughout the year include Family Camps in March and April, an overnight Kids Summer Camp from July 14- and ongoing school fields trips that are being coordinated with local school districts.

Quest’s Camp Thunderbird is owned and operated by Quest, Inc., a nonprofit helping children and adults with developmental disabilities experience a full life in Central Florida and the Tampa Bay region through a range of services proven to increase capabilities and quality of life.

“This grant from the Universal Orlando Foundation is a tremendous boost to our efforts in creating a more inclusive and supportive community for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities,” said John R. Gill, President and CEO at Quest. “We are deeply grateful for the Foundation’s commitment to making a positive impact, and this funding will enable us to enhance our programs and services at Quest’s Camp Thunderbird, reaching even more individuals who can benefit from our support.”

“Caring for the community is at the core of what we do at Universal,” said John Sprouls, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Universal Destinations & Experiences. “The work of our community partners is inspiring. We are honored to recognize and support their vision and to work together to bring positive change to our shared community.”

Quest looks forward to utilizing the funds to further its mission and vision to help people with developmental disabilities experience a full life while providing lifelong services for people with developmental disabilities.

Project SEARCH 2021 Luncheon

We had a lovely luncheon at Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen to celebrate our three graduating interns! They have worked really hard these past nine months and we’re so proud of their dedication and commitment to their future. It’s so exciting to watch students go through the Project Search program and become confident in their skills and abilities.

During the luncheon, we celebrated our graduating interns with certificates of completion and gift cards to their favorite restaurants.

Of our three interns, two are already employed and one just accepted a job offer!

The Intern Experience

Orlando Project SEARCH intern

Orlando

A quiet and shy young man, Orlando started the year with limited confidence in his social and work skills. His first rotation was in Nutritional Services where he trained in food safety protocols, knife skills and customer service. During this rotation, he was able to operate the sandwich wraps station independently. In his second rotation, Orlando chose the engineering department. He learned how to change ceiling tiles and A/C filters, proper painting technique and how to switch out empty oxygen tanks. He maintained the cleanliness and organization of the engineering shop and also learned how to complete light repairs throughout the hospital (changing doorknobs, lights, etc.).  His third rotation was as a Steward (dishwasher) in Nutritional Services where he learned how to operate an industrial dishwashing machine,  organize and maintain all dishware, and maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen area. His excellent work habits, polite manner and quick learning made him a valuable team member. As a result, he was offered a permanent part-time position at the hospital as a Food Preparation Worker. Orlando’s confidence and work skills have soared through his three rotations. We are so proud of him!

Jeremy

Originally a Project SEARCH intern for last school year (2019-2020), Jeremy was not able to complete the program due to COVID-19 shutdowns. This year, he returned to Project SEARCH and successfully completed his training! In his last rotation, he chose Nutritional Services. As a Food Prep Attendant, he trained in food preparation, set up the food service area in the cafeteria and prepared and set out materials and foods for assembly. Jeremy applied for, and was offered, a part-time permanent position at SeaWorld Sharks Underwater Grill as a Steward. He is very happy with his employment and recently received a wage increase. Congratulations Jeremy!

Katelyn Project SEARCH intern

Katelyn

With a deep desire to work in the healthcare field, Katelyn was excited to be part of Project SEARCH. Her first rotation was in the Sterile Processing Department where she learned how to assemble pre-op and post-op packets for patients, transport bed stretchers, sanitize pre-op rooms, properly use PPE, follow checklists and check dates to restock medical carts and storage closets with supplies. Katelyn chose the Sports and Medicine Department for her second rotation where she learned how to clean and sanitize exercise equipment after patient use, clean patient waiting areas, check water temperature, stock and replenish therapy supplies, organize linen rooms and replenish towels and blankets. In her last rotation, Katelyn trained in Supply Support and Transportation. Her training included how to assemble blood culture kits, how to stock supplies, and how to input data in the computer. She also learned how to transport patients to various parts of the hospital for tests. Already an outgoing and energetic person, this experience helped her hone her customer service skills. Katelyn is working closely with her Lead Skills Trainer to seek employment in the healthcare field with all of the new skills she has acquired throughout the Project SEARCH year. She recently accepted a part-time position as a Dietary Aid with Consulate Healthcare of Kissimmee!

About Project Search

Quest partners with the School District of Osceola County and the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to offer individuals with developmental disabilities a transition-to-work internship. This nine-month program allows individuals to seek competitive employment opportunities after high school graduation. For this past program year, interns participated in three 10-week rotations in various departments on a hospital campus to gain job readiness skills that will lead to integrated employment in the community.
