Erin Hennessy has dedicated her career to empowering students with disabilities. With 12 years of experience as a Registered Behavior Technician, she transitioned into teaching at Quest Kids Academy in 2022.

Building Essential Life Skills for the Transition to Adulthood

Through leading the work-study program and overseeing specialized classes in employment skills, financial literacy and more, Erin teaches teenagers and young adults to learn vital transition skills for adulthood.

“We work directly with the students and their families to figure out where they hope to be in the future and what skills we can work on to help them reach the goals they set for themselves,” Erin says.

One way she helps is by leading volunteer opportunities for work-study program students. Once a week, she takes them to Clean the World, where they sort soap bars and plastic bottle amenities collected from the hospitality industry.

“I love that we report to the same supervisor, Mr. Michael, who assigns our tasks. It’s like going to work every week where you have the same supervisor,” Erin says. “You do not have the same daily tasks, but they are similar and predictable. You can develop a skill, receive feedback and then apply it regularly.”

Supporting Job Placement and Retention

Over two years, students have learned to initiate tasks independently and understand expectations without explicit instructions. Erin is thrilled by their growing confidence and independence, which she carries into her new role as the youth employment specialist.

“Once you reach the age of 22, the services you receive decrease. Your access to your school, therapies and education are gone. So, my passion is getting our students ready before they hit that age cap so they can have a smoother transition into their future,” Erin says.

In her role, Erin facilitates work-based learning experiences for school-age students from Quest Kids Academy and the community seeking paid employment opportunities. She works with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation to visit community job sites and develop individualized job placement plans.

After helping a student secure a job, Erin provides onsite job training to maintain retention. Gradually, she steps back and checks in with the supervisors for feedback on additional coaching needs. The input is typically positive and proves our individuals can thrive if given attention, time and the right opportunities.

Real-World Experience: Promoting the Importance of Inclusion

One notable success is a student who participated in the work-study program for three years. For two years, he worked at Blossom Artisanal, a social venture created by Quest, Inc. to provide a safe and supportive work environment for adults and teenagers with developmental disabilities.

This year, he secured a work-based learning experience at the Castle Hotel, where he prepares linens for the hotel rooms. Working two days a week after school, he applies the skills he learned at Blossom while gaining real-world experience.

“Living a full life is about giving people with developmental disabilities the opportunities that the rest of us sometimes take for granted,” Erin says. “It’s about inclusion and being out in the world experiencing life at work surrounded by people and community.”

Supporting Employees Through Meaningful Work Opportunities

Blossom, a social venture created by Quest, Inc., started as a simple idea that transformed into an impactful business. Before her current role as a production coordinator, Crystal Julsaint served as an activity coordinator at Quest’s Adult Training Centers. While caring for the training center’s garden, she recognized an opportunity to teach the center’s clients to make soap using the overflow of herbs. Today, Blossom has expanded to sell soaps and candles, and its products can be found in over 20 stores across the United States.

Employees are responsible for each phase of the business, from hand-producing soaps and candles to packaging, shipping and sales. It’s important to provide this culture of empowerment that fosters independence in a safe and supportive environment.

“I enjoy coming here and pulling the orders and boxing them up,” says Tammy, a Blossom employee.

A Season of Impact for Blossom Employees

For many, Blossom is their first job. Dedicated Quest staff provide customized training templates and materials to ensure the successful production of products while gaining meaningful employment and learning skills that last a lifetime. While all employees undergo comprehensive training across the business, they can focus on the areas they enjoy, excel in or want to learn more about.

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season allows them the most time to hone their skills. With decorations and a selection of holiday music by Leidalyd, the team’s radio DJ, employees are eagerly crafting gift bundles. The season is one of gratitude and happiness, and we witness how much employees love their work.

“It brings them joy to make these bundles,” says Crystal. It gives them more independence, keeps them busy and allows them to contribute to someone else’s happiness.”

Why Your Purchase Makes a Difference

We invite you to support Blossom’s mission while gifting quality products crafted with care. Corporations can place orders, including personalized messages that ensure the gift resonates with their employees. For wholesalers or local customers, site drop-offs are available, providing new opportunities to meet and interact with the Blossom team as they learn to make deliveries.

To guarantee delivery before Christmas, you can place your orders by the week of Dec. 16 or pick them up in person until Dec. 20. between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Last year, employees appreciated seeing customers who placed orders online but chose to pick up their gifts in person. This interaction allowed them to witness Blossom’s processes and directly engage with team members.

“This is their job, so they want to be helpful and showcase what they do,” Crystal says. “They take pride in their candles and soaps, so when people come in, they see the person making their orders beyond photos on the website.”

Purchase your bundle today at Gift Bundles—Blossom Artisanal Products. Your support brings joy and empowers the Blossom team to thrive this holiday season and beyond.

Quest’s Adult Training Centers provide comprehensive services to meet the goals of individuals with developmental disabilities. Through a blend of recreational and life-skills development activities, we empower individuals — like James — on their journeys toward independence.

James has been a cherished member of Quest’s Training Center in Apopka for seven years. The center has allowed him to thrive through opportunities to volunteer, develop skills and build meaningful relationships.

The Impact of Volunteering and Engaging in Recreational Activities

The individuals we serve often struggle to find volunteer opportunities. Through the training center, James has the chance to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank monthly. He sorts donations during the team’s shifts and shows incredible organizational skills. He has a knack for making sure everything is in its proper place.

His efforts earned him a “Volunteer Thank You Award” alongside his peers for going the extra mile — a proud moment highlighting his dedication to the community. James’ impact goes beyond volunteering. He is a beacon of support to his peers. Whether helping them grab their belongings or tidying up shared spaces, he takes the initiative to ensure everything is in order.

“James is always assisting his fellow individuals. He takes ownership of helping others, and if something is wrong, he’ll help fix it,” says Crystal Whitelaw, the activity coordinator at Quest’s Training Center in Apopka.

James also actively participates in recreational activities at the center. He loves dancing, exercising, completing puzzles, and attending community outings, especially bowling and dining at Chili’s. Exposure to these shared community activities allows participants to have enjoyable experiences that improve their quality of life.

Vocational Training: Preparing for Future Employment

The center also gives participants access to vocational training opportunities designed to prepare them for future employment. James is actively engaged in this process, working diligently on his pre-employment requisites while gaining invaluable experience.

One of the first opportunities for participants to work on pre-employment skills is at the Snack Shack in the center. The Snack Shack is a convenience store run by program participants that carries a selection of items for purchase. James has mastered unloading, organizing and stocking the products, as well as managing the store’s inventory.  He travels to employment service sites monthly to broaden his understanding of workplace dynamics and responsibilities.

A Journey of Growth and Inspiration

James’ journey shows how individuals with developmental disabilities can grow and engage meaningfully in a nurturing environment. We are immensely proud of James and grateful to have him in our Quest community. His positive energy uplifts those around him, inspiring others to live with a spirit of kindness, enthusiasm and commitment. With over 30 years of experience in caregiving and a background in education, Tarsheala Lester has dedicated her life to helping others. Her journey has led her to Quest, Inc., where she passionately supports individuals with developmental disabilities.

“I was a certified nursing assistant before this; I took care of my grandmother for 30-plus years,” Tarsheala says. “I was also a school teacher and a principal at a private school, so I’ve always been in the field of helping others.”

Empowering Clients Through Direct Support and Skill Development

Tarsheala has made a remarkable impact on the individuals Quest serves. She started as a direct support professional at our Intermediate Care Facilities, providing personal care and assisting non-ambulatory clients with daily living in a nurturing home environment.

Her commitment didn’t stop there; she often worked overtime at Quest’s Adult Training Center in Tampa, which supports individuals in developing life skills and engaging in recreational activities tailored to their needs.

Tailoring Instruction for Individual Needs

In August, Tarsheala transitioned to the training center full time as a skill instructor, leading various skill development programs. Through engaging recreational sessions centered around fitness, cooking, games and puzzles, she helps clients enhance their problem-solving and social skills while fostering connections.

Additionally, through the training center’s adult enrichment classes, she teaches practical life skills — like counting money, grocery shopping and handling household tasks — critical for promoting client independence. She stresses the importance of tailoring her instruction to meet her client’s needs. It’s all about starting at the highest level and adjusting based on their reactions and capabilities.

“Instilling these skills in them daily so they achieve memorization is very helpful and productive as long as it’s at a level they are capable of,” Tarsheala says. “The success is just seeing them here trying their best.”

Recognized for Excellence in Leadership

Tarsheala’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Within just a month of joining the training center, she was voted employee of the month by her peers. She also became the second-ever captain of the month, a prestigious role recognizing individuals who exemplify Quest’s mission. As team captain, she stepped up, coordinating communication and ensuring her colleagues had the resources to succeed.

Letitia Yates, program director at Quest’s Training Center, praises Tarsheala’s positive attitude and unwavering work ethic.

“Tarsheala displays leadership qualities every day. Her decision-making skills and positive attitude make her a favorite among staff and clients,” Letitia says. “She consistently strives to improve our department by giving great ideas and suggestions. She has an awesome one-on-one rapport with the clients in her care and is a great addition to our team. We are lucky to have her.”

Tarsheala’s contributions at Quest enhance clients’ lives and inspire those around her. Her journey illustrates how one can transform lives through teaching, compassion, patience and support.

Quest, Inc. empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to experience a full life through meaningful engagement. Volunteerism is a transformative avenue for client growth at Quest’s Adult Training Centers and Quest Kids Academy.

Volunteering for Adults at Quest’s Training Centers

At Quest’s Training Centers in Tampa and Apopka, we offer various skill development and vocational programs tailored to meet individual goals. Understanding that opportunities to participate in the community are often limited or not available to the individuals Quest serves, community volunteerism is an experience we prioritize.

Clients from Quest’s Training Center in Tampa dedicate their time each week to volunteer with Meals on Wheels. They find great joy in delivering packed lunches to seniors in need, fostering meaningful connections within the community that benefit both our clients and the individuals they serve.

Clients at Quest’s Training Center in Apopka volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank twice a month. During their shift, they sort overstock donations from Starbucks, which is part of the food that Second Harvest distributes to more than 750 feeding partners.

The experience is imperative for clients seeking employment. Volunteering allows staff to identify challenges a client may experience in the workplace and help them align their tangible skills with practical abilities. Gevena Glenn, a skill instructor at the center, enjoys these moments to provide participants with supervision, engagement and support.

“It’s great going out in the community and teaching the clients that serving the community impacts someone else’s life. It’s fulfilling work they enjoy and always ask about returning to,” Gevena says.

Students Learning Life Skills at Quest Kids Academy

Similarly, Quest Kids Academy’s life skills class students enjoy volunteering at Second Harvest. What began as a monthly activity to ease students into the experience has evolved into a weekly engagement.

In class, students practice maintaining personal space, greetings and boundaries with their peers. This focus on community integration fosters the social skills necessary to transition into adulthood.

“Volunteering provides us an opportunity to generalize those skills and practice them in a new environment in a meaningful way that connects students beyond the regular school day,” says Melissa Lopez, director of Quest Kids Academy.

Work-Study Program for Students Seeking Employment

Other students with employment goals engage in a structured work-study program. They volunteer at Clean the World, sorting soap bars and plastic bottle amenities. These tasks focus on building stamina, following directions and receiving feedback — essential skills for workplace success.

Since starting the volunteer experience two years ago, students have grown from needing explicit instructions to assessing and performing tasks independently. The camaraderie and support between peers have also been invaluable.

“We help each other out when we need to and congratulate each other on good boxes when we finish,” says Darrell, a student in the work-study program at QKA. “When I first went to Clean the World, I was a little iffy about it, but it’s grown on me over the years, and I like going every week.”

A Journey of Growth Through Volunteering

Quest is committed to cultivating an environment that prioritizes independence and community integration. Our volunteering initiatives transform the lives of our clients and enrich the community around us.

We are eager to expand volunteer opportunities across Quest’s Training Centers and Quest Kids Academy, strengthening partnerships that continue to broaden our clients’ engagement with the community. Together, we can support a world where everyone has the chance to contribute and grow.

Those We Serve – Kamisheba https://questinc.org/those-we-serve-kamisheba/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 19:38:46 +0000 https://questinc.org/?p=15572 Kamisheba has gained independence through community support at Quest Village for adults with developmental disabilities.

The post Those We Serve – Kamisheba appeared first on Quest, Inc..

Quest Village is an innovative residential community for independent adults with developmental disabilities nestled in the vibrant community of East Orlando. Among its thriving residents is Kamisheba, whose journey shows that independence is within reach for all at Quest Village.

A New Beginning: Touring and Moving into Quest Village

Kamisheba first discovered Quest Village through the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. Encouraged by a staff member, she attended an open house with her aunt Clarice that would change their lives forever.

“It was amazing to see all those people there about to become residents as well as the staff,” Kamisheba recalls. “We saw a sample house of what it would be like to live in there.”

Through orientation gatherings and meetings with staff, Kamisheba and Clarice agreed that moving into Quest Village was a natural fit for her. Move-in day was a defining moment. The modern apartment units, which include a porch, Wi-Fi capabilities and new appliances, excited her as she realized she could design her space her way.

“It was very surreal. I remember opening the door myself, and although there was no furniture in there, I was amazed to see that I would get my own place,” she said.

Initially, she needed time to adjust to living alone, but she found support through staff and friendships with other residents. The community center’s hospitality kitchen and multi-purpose room gave Kamisheba a strong sense of community.

Some of her favorite memories include joining book clubs, attending parties and celebrating the birthdays of her fellow residents. She also enjoys access to the computer room, where she can browse the internet and learn more about her interests and the world around her.

Embracing Independence Through Easy Access

Now, with six years at Quest Village, she is empowered to navigate her life confidently. Kamisheba proudly works full time at the airport, and due to Quest Village’s easy access to transportation, she can safely get to and from her job. She candidly shares that she no longer has barriers to early obstacles like paying bills and asking for help.

“[Quest Village] enabled me to get used to being independent, doing things on my own and being able to ask for help, which is hard for me because I enjoy my independence,” Kamisheba says.

Access to entertainment at the Waterford Lakes Town Center has also helped Kamisheba maintain the independence she desires. She can participate in the community by shopping at her favorite stores or going to the movie theater or bowling alley.

Independent Living at its Best

Kamisheba and her aunt Clarice are thankful for the peace and independence Quest Village provides. She exemplifies how independent adults with developmental disabilities can develop self-sufficiency and carve their path to a fulfilling life when given a supportive environment.

‘Marlon Jones has served as the community support coach at Quest Village since its inception in 2017. With a background in psychology and a passion for helping others, he fosters greater independence and community among residents.

Quest Village is an innovative residential community for independent adults with developmental disabilities. As a community support coach, Marlon provides services to meet each resident’s needs, including accompanying them to doctor’s appointments, helping them pay their bills, assisting them with their budgets, and filling their prescriptions. He supports residents with these everyday life skills so they can learn to live independently.

“We offer endless support; residents can come to staff for everything. I think they begin to feel more at ease and open up to us, allowing us to assist them with whatever they might need,” Marlon says.

Building Independence and Community

A crucial part of Marlon’s mission is promoting social interaction and community engagement. He ensures everyone feels accepted and encourages residents to share interests and activities with fellow residents and staff. Whether he’s ordering pizza for the group or working out with residents in the gym, he enjoys any opportunity to build relationships with the residents.

“Marlon’s office is the ‘party’ office of Village. All the residents hang out and visit him on their off days from work. He engages with everyone, and Quest Village would not operate without him,” says Shawna Wallace, director of Quest Village.

Over time, these interactions foster lifelong friendships, leading residents to participate in offsite activities like dinners and movie outings. Due to his efforts, they feel empowered to explore and independently engage within the community.

Milestones and Growth at Quest Village

Marlon celebrates countless milestones with residents. He’s observed remarkable transformations, such as residents breaking out of their shells and making friends or individuals who once struggled to maintain employment becoming supervisors in their fields. This growth reflects the residents’ progress and highlights the supportive environment the staff fosters.

“Seeing residents evolve is amazing. I’ve been here from day one, so seeing where they were and where they are now lets me know there’s a need for Quest Village,” Marlon says.

He also emphasizes the importance of maintaining close relationships with residents’ families, who offer invaluable insights into their needs. This collaboration significantly enhances his ability to provide adequate support and allows families to utilize his knowledge and kindness to remain up-to-date on their loved one’s progress.

Celebrating Inclusivity and Teamwork

Marlon embodies the spirit of Quest Village through his unwavering dedication to residents’ well-being and growth. As Quest continues to foster independence and community connections, we are grateful for Marlon’s commitment to building a supportive, engaging environment that enriches lives.

“Marlon is the best team player. He communicates well and ensures everyone is treated fairly and held accountable. He is a breath of fresh air to work with and brings smiles and joy to the workplace,” Shawna says.

Overcoming Communication Challenges Through ABA Therapy https://questinc.org/overcoming-communication-challenges-through-aba-therapy/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 15:30:51 +0000 https://questinc.org/?p=15463 Learn how Alex has made progress communicating with ABA therapy.

The post Overcoming Communication Challenges Through ABA Therapy appeared first on Quest, Inc..

]]>

Communication and transitions can be challenging for many children. One child, whom we will refer to as Alex, has made significant strides in managing these moments since joining Quest Kids Therapy eight years ago.

Initially, Alex was nonverbal when they began therapy at age two. This led to frustration expressed through tantrums, and transitions from preferred to less preferred activities caused further distress, resulting in lengthy meltdowns. With the help of ABA therapy, Alex’s behavior and communication significantly evolved over the years.

“This year, Alex has not needed any support in the classroom for behavior issues. Their refusals to complete work are low and short-lived, and their compliance and strategies to manage frustration have generalized to the school environment,” says Jen Simon, senior Board-Certified Behavior Analyst at Quest Kids Therapy.

These improvements have positively impacted family dynamics, making daily life at home and in public much smoother. Independence has soared; Alex can get ready for school, shower, and go to bed alone. The journey has also been educational for Alex’s mother. Attending numerous parent training sessions has taught her to apply ABA strategies outside Alex’s sessions.

“I was inspired to complete and get certified to become a Registered Behavior Technician, which was extremely helpful to learn the ABA speak,” says Alex’s mom. “I now understand how to create a ‘chain’ or technique to help Alex learn something. If I have a question on how to do that, I can ask their BCBA, and she can speak to me in that ABA speak, and I can turn around and implement it at home.”

Dealing with behaviors that result from autism spectrum disorder can be challenging for families. Alex’s mom encourages others experiencing similar journeys to rely on support from Quest’s team and document those challenges. Looking back at documented moments can remind parents of just how far their children have come and the parallel growth in themselves.

Quest Kids Therapy is proud to witness Alex’s success and notes that they will graduate from therapy soon.

The 10th Annual Golf Quest was a hole-in one, raising over $53,000 to support Quest’s mission of helping individuals with developmental disabilities experience a full life.

We were thrilled to see participants, volunteers and sponsors showing their support on the green at the Omni Resort Orlando at ChampionsGate. The International Course offered 18 dramatic and challenging holes for players of all skill levels.

Serving Up Snacks and Smiles at the Snack Shack

Along the course, a group of clients from Quest’s Training Center in Apopka hosted a table at hole ten, where they handed out snacks from the Snack Shack to golfers. The Snack Shack is a program that allows individuals with developmental disabilities to learn about customer service, inventory and financial management, which helps them become more independent and confident when performing daily activities.

Not only did the clients cheer on each golfer, but they also shared their experiences working at the Snack Shack within the Training Center. “They were like fans to us,” said Rachel, a client at Quest’s Training Center in Apopka. I loved sharing about our group outings and what we enjoy about Quest.”

After 18 holes, participants enjoyed lunch and a presentation from Quest Chief Operating Officer Brooke Eakins. During lunch, the Snack Shack clients read off the winning numbers for the silent auction, where raffle winners took home some fantastic prizes.

Celebrating Our Generous Sponsors

Golf Quest wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Their support helps us continue our mission to provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities so that they can experience a full life.

Golf Quest Sponsors Include:

Among our dedicated supporters, Williams Construction and Development has supported Quest for 15 years and attended Golf Quest for the past five years. “We do a lot of work in the residential facilities and get to connect with the clients,” said Donnie Williams, Vice President of Williams Construction. “This is one of the huge fundraisers for our company.”

Our Incredible Volunteers Make It Happen

From selling raffle tickets to checking-in golfers, it takes over 14 volunteers to make this event happen. For volunteer Cassie Roach, the decision to serve stems from Quest’s profound impact on her son with autism. “It’s great to see all the different aspects of Quest and what they can provide for children and then adults as they get older,” said Roach. “Because of Quest, I have hope that I will have support for my son’s whole life, not just now.”

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success! To stay tuned with Quest’s upcoming events, join our newsletter at this link.
